Good to Know
The history of the shiitake mushroom goes a long way back into the past. According to an old legend, Japanese inhabitants offered the shiitake mushroom as a gift to their emperor back in the year 199. Chinese sources seem to date back even further. It is the most commonly cultivated edible mushroom after button mushrooms. Shiitake mushrooms are very similar to brown button mushrooms as both have a brown cap and a light-coloured stem. The gills of the shiitake mushroom are also light in colour.

Utilisation
The mushrooms can be utilised excellently with all types of dishes in which button mushrooms would otherwise be used. Shiitake mushrooms are widely used in Asian medicine for curing various types of illnesses (e.g. inflammation, stomach problems, headaches and dizziness).
